Buying guide: Remote Start Generators

With a remote start generator you get power at the push of a button – without having to start it at the unit itself. Whether by radio remote control from your motorhome, by convenient electric start on the construction site or fully automatically via an ATS connection as home backup power – you decide how and from where you start your generator. Even in the cold and wet, or when the unit is safely set up outdoors.

Remote control start – start your generator conveniently from a distance without walking over to it

Comfort in cold & wet weather – ideal when the generator is outside and you stay indoors

Safe location – runs outdoors for proper exhaust ventilation, started conveniently from indoors

Fully automatic with ATS – during a power cut the generator starts by itself and switches over the supply

Versatile – from radio remote control for camping to ATS diesel generators for home backup power

What is a remote start generator?

With a conventional generator, you have to stand right next to the unit and start the engine with a recoil starter or ignition key – which costs time and patience, especially in the cold or at hard-to-reach locations.

A remote start generator saves you the trip. Depending on the model, you start the engine by radio remote control from several metres away, with a convenient electric start or fully automatically via an ATS connection during a power cut.

This is a real benefit, especially when the generator is placed outdoors for safety reasons: you start it comfortably from indoors without having to go out in wind and rain.

Honest advice: when remote start is really worth it

Advertising likes to present remote start as a must-have. At Kipor.org we tell you the truth: remote start is a convenience feature – and it is worth it whenever the generator is hard to reach, is often started in cold or wet conditions, or needs to stand by unattended as a backup power source.

If your generator is right next to you anyway and you rarely start it, a conventional electric or recoil start is often the cheaper option. Remote start technology costs more – it should be used where convenience, time savings and operational reliability really count.

When remote start generators are the right choice

Remote start generators come into their own wherever walking over to the unit is a nuisance: as home backup power with an ATS connection, in a motorhome or when camping with a start from inside, on construction sites where the generator is set up far away, and at outdoor events and in mobile catering.

On farms, larger properties or anywhere the generator is set up at a distance because of noise and exhaust fumes, remote start is the most convenient and often the safest solution too.

Radio remote control, electric start or ATS?

Radio remote control is the right choice for mobile, flexible use – camping, motorhomes and events. You start and stop the engine from several metres away without going to the unit. Models such as the FME XG-SF 4000ER come with this function as standard.

Electric start replaces the recoil starter with a convenient push button or ignition key on the unit itself – ideal if you start it often but are standing next to it anyway.

ATS connection (automatic transfer switch) is the premium solution for home backup power: if the public grid fails, the generator starts fully automatically and takes over the supply – with no action needed from you. This function is available on many powerful diesel models such as the FME 5600D Carbon, the FME 8000iD or the FME 15000iD.

You will find the start options and features of each model – such as radio remote control, ATS function, soundproof enclosure or three-phase output – on the respective product page.

Backup power with remote start and ATS

For homes with a heat pump, modern heating controls, solar PV or sensitive IT, a diesel generator with an ATS connection is the most convenient backup power solution. If the grid fails, the generator starts by itself and switches over the supply – you don't even need to be at home.

Which power class and which features (single-phase or three-phase, with radio remote control or ATS, with or without an auxiliary tank) suit your building depends heavily on the appliances you actually need to run. We will advise you free of charge and independently of any manufacturer.
