Buying guide: Inverter Generators

With modern inverter generators you get a clean sine wave with stable voltage and frequency – the only technology that is truly suitable for sensitive electronics. Whether as a safe backup power solution for modern home technology, for quiet power at the campsite and in your motorhome, or as a professional energy source on construction sites and in commercial use – you decide when and where you use genuinely clean power.

Pure sine wave – safe power for laptops, TVs, heat pumps, heating systems & medical equipment

Quiet operation – ideal for camping, motorhomes, residential areas and events

Stable voltage & frequency – total harmonic distortion typically below 3%, close to mains quality

Efficient & economical – eco mode automatically adjusts engine speed to the load

Versatile – from camping inverters to diesel inverters for home backup power

What is an inverter generator?

On a conventional generator, the output voltage is directly linked to the engine speed – if the speed drops or rises, voltage and frequency fluctuate.

An inverter generator takes a different approach: the alternator first produces DC voltage, which an electronic inverter then converts into a clean 230 V sine wave at exactly 50 Hz.

The result: constant voltage, stable frequency and total harmonic distortion typically below 3% – values that come very close to the quality of the public grid.

Honest advice: when an inverter really makes sense

In the industry, inverter technology is often sold as "always better". At Kipor.org we tell you the truth: an inverter is the right choice whenever sensitive electronics are connected – such as laptops, servers, modern heat pumps, heating controls, medical equipment, hybrid PV systems or drone chargers.

If you only want to power site floodlights, drills or a water pump, an AVR or SVR generator is often the more economical choice. Inverter technology is sophisticated and costs more – it should be used where it can really deliver its added value.

When inverter generators are the right choice

Inverter generators are the only safe solution for everything that needs a clean sine wave: laptops, tablets and smartphones, modern TVs and audio systems, medical devices, heating controls and heat pumps, PV inverters, IT infrastructure, drone chargers (e.g. DJI Agras), refrigeration units with inverter compressors and high-quality tools with electronic control.

At the campsite, in a motorhome or food truck, at outdoor events, in mobile catering and as home backup power for modern buildings with sensitive technology, inverter generators are the only right choice.

Petrol inverter or diesel inverter?

Petrol inverter generators are compact, light and ideal for motorhomes, camping and mobile catering – models such as the FME XG-SF 3300E weighing just 21.4 kg or the FME XG-SF 4000ER with radio remote control are the typical choice here. They are particularly suited to occasional use and outputs of up to approx. 4 kW.

Diesel inverter generators such as the FME 5600D Carbon, the FME 8000iD or the FME 15000iD are the right solution for continuous loads, high outputs, backup power and commercial use. Diesel engines last longer, are more economical and, with heating-oil auxiliary tanks, fuel can be stored practically indefinitely – many diesel inverter models also offer features such as an ATS connection, radio remote control and soundproof enclosures.

We are happy to work out which power class and which fuel suit your application in a short consultation – you will find the detailed technical features of each model (e.g. unbalanced load capability, same-power behaviour, ATS function, three-phase output) on the respective product page.

Backup power with inverter generators

For homes with a heat pump, modern heating controls, solar PV or sensitive IT, a diesel inverter generator with an ATS connection (automatic transfer switch) is by far the best backup power solution. Inverter technology delivers the sine wave quality modern home electronics need – a quality a conventional synchronous generator simply cannot achieve.

Which power class and which features (single-phase or three-phase, with or without ATS, with or without an auxiliary tank) suit your building depends heavily on the appliances you actually need to run. We will advise you free of charge and independently of any manufacturer.

Inverter generator brands at Kipor.org

For inverter generators, we stock FME, Genergy, Champion, DeWalt, Hyundai and KIPOR. Every model is technically tested by us and adapted to the European market.

For our diesel inverter generators, we rely on proven engines from renowned manufacturers and on inverter electronics whose characteristics we document for each unit – so you know exactly what you are buying.

Why choose an inverter generator?

  • waves

    Clean sine wave

Conventional generators fluctuate. Inverters clean up the power digitally – your laptop and phone will thank you.

  • volume_down

    Whisper mode

Enclosed housings and eco mode make them up to 30% quieter than conventional generators.

  • eco

    Fuel saver

The engine only revs as high as it needs to. Need just 100 W? It simply ticks over at idle.
